I’ve mostly read Kant through the *Critique of Pure Reason* and other parts related to metaphysics; I haven’t read much of the ethics. Of course, when studying general ethics, one does read some secondhand introductions, but they usually just give a brief account of the so-called “categorical imperative” and broadly classify Kant as a representative of so-called “deontology.” I don’t have a deep grasp of it, but it feels to me that these tedious summaries hardly show the force one senses in Kant’s texts. After a few rounds of Foucault, we may consider switching books. Possible candidates include Kant’s *Critique of Judgment*, *Critique of Pure Reason*, and Hegel’s *Phenomenology of Spirit*, or we might recommend some other books instead. This year’s reading group is set for Saturday afternoons. Of course, Wu’s comments and those of the students pointed out that while my article reads smoothly overall, a close look reveals many gaps in the logic, especially the final section, which seems overly hurried. This is certainly something that can be improved in part—particularly, the last section ought to have been written in more detail.
