Sender: AvenueQ (Traveler on the Chang’an Road), Section: Joke Title: SMG Live Broadcast of the Solar Eclipse: Outrageous Quotes (Repost) Posted from: Peking University Weiming Station (Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 18:06:44), forwarded 【 The following text is reposted from the Triangle discussion board 】 【 The original was posted by AvenueQ 】 http://www.douban.com/group/topic/7351690/ 1 At one observation point, clouds made it impossible to see the total solar eclipse. Male host: “There are clouds now, so we can’t see the solar eclipse. When the sun is completely covered later, we should be able to see the stars, right?” Professor: “You can’t see them.” Male host: “You should be able to, though….
阅读全文A Centennial Astronomical Feast: The July 22 Total Solar Eclipse along the YangtzeSteed posted on 2009-07-05 16:20 On July 22, the moon’s huge shadow will once again sweep across our country, and the spectacle of a total solar eclipse will once more pay a visit to China. Although it has been less than a year since the last total solar eclipse, these two eclipses could hardly be more different. The total solar eclipse of August 1, 2008, occurred in the evening, when the sun was already slanting low in the western sky at totality, and the duration was only a little over two minutes. This eclipse, by contrast, will occur…
阅读全文Today, NKM’s grand visit saved me from turning into a solitary castaway. I showed him his logic paper, “Counterfactual Conditionals in Situational Semantics,” and we tossed around a few things about counterfactual conditionals and possible-world logic. I am completely a layman when it comes to logic, so my opinions probably won’t be of much help to him either (exchanging ideas with laypeople is beneficial for philosophical thinking, but I do not know how it works in a strange specialty like logic). Personally, I do not concern myself with technical details such as the construction of related formal semantic systems. What I mainly care about, as far as counterfactual conditionals are…

I will still be hanging around Xin Dao on the Saturdays of next week and the week after that, though I may go back to Shanghai on the 18th and the 25th. And I should be back in August. I have no particular plans for the summer vacation salons; basically I’ll just be studying on my own or surfing the internet. Acquaintances are welcome to come keep me company and chat idly, and acquaintances are also welcome to bring along family and friends to get acquainted. 阅读全文Jiang Xiaoyuan’s concept. He says that astronomy in ancient China served politics: anomalous changes in the heavens corresponded to anomalous changes among human affairs, especially changes in dynasties. In particular, major events like solar eclipses signaled crisis or moral failure. The emperor had to hurry to examine himself, offer sacrifices and reports to Heaven, and even grant a general amnesty, and so on. Modern people know that celestial phenomena are objective facts; one can even predict the time of a solar eclipse millions of years in advance. How, then, could they possibly be linked to the fortunes of human dynasties? And worshipping Heaven is only an empty ritual—what meaning could…

Young people with aspirations are warmly welcome to apply to Peking University’s program in the history of science and technology or philosophy of…
阅读全文Today I brought three slim books of minor historical studies, but looking at them I felt nothing much— or rather, I had no mind to read. In the morning, an old classmate who has been staying at my place these past few days came along, and left before lunch to go to a gathering. byz came at noon to keep me company while I sat there in a daze; a little later qy&zgz came by to chat idly; a little later byz left for a meeting. In the evening zzg arrived to chat idly; a little later qy&zgz left, and zzg and I sat there in a daze; a little…
阅读全文Philosophy should be weaving a web, not forging chains. It should establish connections rather than draw chasms; it should move toward a more open world rather than bury itself in a closed cave. So the philosopher does not want, before himself or before others, to draw a trench or dig a pit, pressing for a decision: jump down—are you coming over, or not coming over? Philosophers like to probe and reflect, but they never force. By probing, I mean that when we step into a new world, we are not content to linger at the threshold, but must also gaze into the far distance, then move forward—and keep going; by…
阅读全文Today no one came… I’m getting ready to leave early… After finishing that assignment translation, all that was left was Sun Laoshi’s paper. Today I hauled over a pile of books about Aristotle, only to discover that after finishing the translation I was suddenly drained of energy and could hardly read them, so the latter half of the day was more or less wasted… All at once I found myself missing the days of studying at Egg Hall with A Fei. It really is true that the more one sits idly alone, the more foolish one becomes. Worse still, I didn’t bring my headphones, so I couldn’t even listen to…
