Preface

After nearly a year of preparation, this issue of Gongqingyuan has finally arrived on schedule!

…Though I very much want to say that, the fact is that the publication of this issue of Gongqingyuan was delayed by several months beyond the original plan! As editor-in-chief, I am deeply ashamed. I won’t go into the reasons at length; the main problem was that the layout work had been put off for far too long! By the way, the layout editor for this issue is also me…

Let us hope this belated collection will not disappoint everyone too much. I also hope that everyone will, as always, continue to support Gongqingyuan and submit more contributions, so that future issues of Gongqingyuan will surely come out faster and better.

Since its founding in January 1991, our Gongqingyuan has already come through 15 years: from the less-than-ten-page mimeographed handwritten bulletin that once carried brief notices about Youth League Day, to the thick, content-rich volume it is today, in which so much effort and sweat, joy and achievement from alumni have been condensed. How important a role it has played in the growth history of the Department of Philosophy—these things need no further saying. When we stand before Gongqingyuan, this precious inheritance left by our predecessors, we cannot help but feel reverence!

And yet Gongqingyuan belongs not only to our predecessors. The reason it is worth cherishing is precisely that it is our own! The genre of Gongqingyuan has never had a fixed position: at times it is like an academic special issue, at times like a literary magazine, at times again like an old news review recording the passage of time, and occasionally it becomes a themed anthology… More often than not, it resembles nothing at all: to be precise, Gongqingyuan is simply a “stage” that belongs to us alone, a free space in which we may perform the brilliance of our own youth!

Gongqingyuan merely faithfully records the people, events, moods, and youth that belong only to us in the philosophy department. One generation of editors after another has poured heart and sweat into it here, and one generation of classmates after another has left a word or two here—not in pursuit of any fame, profit, or achievement, and not even for the sake of being archived as historical material, but only in the hope that, at some moment, it may stir up a faint feeling of nostalgia.

Since the articles collected in Gongqingyuan are subject to no fixed requirements, and since there is in fact no clear boundary between the various literary forms, this issue of Gongqingyuan is divided into five parts simply according to the vague similarities of article style. It should be noted that the fourth part contains the three first-prize undergraduate essays from this year’s “Aizhi Cup” essay competition.

As the layout editor, I must additionally state here that the various artistic fonts used in this issue of Gongqingyuan (mainly the Fangzheng and Hanyi font libraries, some of which have been legally purchased) as well as most of the illustrations all come from the internet; the illustrations are mainly from the free image library website tucoo.com, and some of the clip art comes from Microsoft’s official website; the copyrights belong to the original authors. Fortunately, Gongqingyuan is a non-profit publication and therefore does not constitute infringement. But if, by chance, my actions have caused damage to the interests of the copyright holders, I alone will bear responsibility. I also hope that our readers will develop the good habits of academic honesty, of paying attention to authors’ rights and copyrights, and of citing sources when reprinting or citing others’ work.
