    Human Flesh Search Is Terrifying

Today I saw CCTV’s program “The Roundup of Human Flesh Search” on Everybody Talks Law, and it was truly astonishing. Too terrifying.   Before, I had only witnessed the “power of Chinese netizens” in the Zhou Laohu affair; that power was indeed formidable, and its effects seemed positive as well, but even then my comments were anything but optimistic.   Looking again at these “human flesh search” cases, they also serve to confirm my longstanding judgment: the Cultural Revolution is still continuing. The essence of the Cultural Revolution is not dictatorship or autocracy, but mob violence, the uproar of “justice.” When we see Chinese netizens, so “full of a sense…

On BBS’s Suitability for Academic Exchange: Online Forums Should Replace Academic Conferences

http://hps.phil.pku.edu.cn/bbs/read.php?tid=409    Before reading this post, you may as well first look at: the 4th and 5th floor of http://hps.phil.pku.edu.cn/bbs/read.php?tid=408.  I have never attended an academic conference, so my understanding of the matter is purely speculative. If there are any inaccuracies or improprieties, please do point them out. Many activities are epochal: in a certain era, such activities possess important practical significance; yet as the times change, the original practical purpose may no longer be needed, or may be replaced by other activities, while the activity itself may still continue in form, becoming a symbolic, ritual, ceremonial, or recreational activity. Perhaps “academic conferences” will also be like this?  Are there…

    On Certain Matters

This time the city-state’s approach was a misstep…… Television and the Internet were originally the magic weapons for wearing down modern people’s political passion; a few hotheaded youths venting online could hardly stir up any waves, nor did it have much influence. On the contrary, the more people vent on television and the Internet, the harder it is for them to cohere in real life. Young people today are, after all, not the same as they were 18 years ago. But now that all sorts of forums have also been shut down across the board, it is bound to make many people who were originally indifferent to politics have to…

    Spoofs, Media, and Random Reflections

The biggest advantage of being in Shanghai is being able to enjoy air conditioning; the second is being able, now and then, to watch the TV news. I just saw two news items that were rather interesting. One was the “first blog lawsuit in China,” saying that an associate professor at some university had sued Blogcn because, in a certain blog post, someone had insulted him and attacked him personally by name…… In fact it was just a little log entry of three to five hundred characters, with a title like “Rubbish Book, Rubbish Person” or something of the sort. It said: today there’s an exam, so hurry up and…

On the South China Tiger Incident

http://hps.phil.pku.edu.cn/bbs/read.php?tid=282  Lately it’s felt a bit like repressed feelings have suddenly burst out in one concentrated explosion, with momentum gushing up from the stomach~ Maybe it’s borrowed from Schopenhauer’s stimulation?  As for the South China tiger affair, I’d long wanted to say a few things, but had never managed to get them out. Taking the repost on the forum, and riding this surge of momentum, I finally can’t keep quiet anymore.  This is a joke post—surely I can see that, can’t I? Of course I can. The moment I saw “reposted from XX forum” and “repost MP,” I knew it was only a joke, and a really brilliant one at…

A Post and My Reply (About Speaking Out Online)

Future Peking University People Community – Webmaster’s Workshop – Strongly Requesting (well, let’s say suggesting instead)                                                       Shujian Piaoling                                                       Strongly suggest:                                                       Could you please leave up those articles that take Peking University to task? Why can’t I find a single one? “Listening to all sides makes one wise”!!!                                                       2005-8-11 08:41 PM                                                       Flying Dolphin                                                       But that’s too extreme, ah                                                       2005-8-11 09:45 PM                                                       Gu Cha                                                       “Listening to all sides makes one wise” is certainly right, but you also have to distinguish among places, occasions, and situations. Some articles may indeed contain a little bit of truth, but behind that little bit of truth there are also many distortions. Of course, “listening to all…
