    From Fisherman to Pirate

The will that is inherited, the surging currents of the age, people’s dreams… these are things that cannot be stopped. As long as people continue seeking the answer to freedom, they will never cease! Recently, an online friend thought I was impressive and said he wanted to imitate my way of studying. Of course I told him, please, don’t ever do that. My lazy, irregular, and unambitious way of studying—if anyone else tried to imitate it, it would almost certainly be ruined. And I myself have always faced the danger of becoming a heap of useless waste who accomplishes nothing, so it’s definitely not something to take casually. More to…

A Set of Questions About Falling in Love

A Set of Questions About Dating   I saw this set of questions on Mist’s campus page (though he likes to change his name; still, I’ll allow myself to address him this way) (http://blog.xiaonei.com/GetEntry.do?id=341170940&owner=5675), and he didn’t go on to tag anyone else. But looking at these kinds of questions, I thought they might be somewhat helpful in introducing my views on love, so I took the initiative and asked him to tag me~ After all, if I always use my own language and perspective to explain my views on love and such, the things I focus on may be completely at cross purposes with what ordinary people care about….

Supplementary Notes and Self-Introduction Following “Zheng mm”

Supplementary notes and self-introduction following the “seeking mm” notice Before introducing myself, let me first say a few more words about what I think of mm’s or applicants’ side of things. As I said before, I do not preset any standard for “what the relationship between an mm and me ought to be”; as for “what it even means to be an ‘applicant,’” I am even less in possession of any definite concept. Obviously, the mere fact that you say “I’m applying” and I say “Sure” does not mean the establishment of any more specific relationship. The question is, then what? In short, whether as “mm”…

[Unpinned][Pinned 2] An Introduction to Gu Chi, Contact Information, and Comments and Questions

Suixuan’s miserably sparse comments and messages have always left me rather depressed. But when I look at those more popular academic blogs, most of the comments there are just “Good post,” “Respect,” “Adore,” “Saved,” and so on, or else a couple of contemptuous insults. Readers like me who can respectfully offer criticism are still very rare. Thinking of it that way, the quiet on Suixuan is actually a good thing. Many friends would rather communicate with me privately than leave even a few words on the blog, and of course I can understand that—as I, too, would rather argue online than ask questions in class. Everyone has his or her…

How I Came to Approach Philosophy of Science (A Whig History)

I didn’t write it well… not recommended reading.. Life is full of possibilities. In the course of my growing up, had it not been for those chance encounters and coincidences, I’m afraid I would not have set out on the road I’m on now—perhaps I would have gone into economics, or become a scientist; most likely, perhaps, I would have become some kind of amateur science nerd or armchair philosopher. But in the end I still ended up here: the philosophy of technology at Peking University. It was accidental, and yet somehow it also feels as though it came naturally, the most natural outcome of all. Looking back over my…

Why “ideals” cannot be crushed by “reality”

(This article is chaotic; not recommended reading.) We often see people who are so-called “idealists” — university students, for example — who, after they “step into society,” are struck by all the cruelty of “reality,” eventually give up their “ideals,” throw themselves into the embrace of “reality,” and become yet another “petty bourgeois.” We then say that an idealist has become realistic? But what does that mean? What exactly is idealism? And what is it that drives them to “become realistic”? The issue I mentioned last time in the 08 undergraduate freshmen group is precisely this. The previous article did not finish it, so let me start over. Speaking of…

    What Is “Ideal”?

Today in the freshman group for the 2008 cohort, I mentioned this question (the 08 freshmen are really interesting): what is “ideal”? The concept of “ideal” is one I use fairly often, though I haven’t made many distinctions about it. In “Scattered Notes on Love and Hatred During the Period of Seclusion,” I brought up the connection between “idealism—subjective idealism—philosophy”; in an earlier article I probably mentioned it too (though I couldn’t find it); and more than two years ago, when I talked about “My Life Ideal,” I was using the word ideal entirely in everyday language; while two and a half years ago, in one of the articles that…

Scattered Reflections on Love and Hate During My Retreat

To write a long essay on the idea of “love,” the conception of this project began at least three years ago. But because of fluctuations in my thinking and other factors, I could not bring myself to start. Only just before my period of seclusion did I finally set down an “introductory note” and begin formally brewing this essay. What I post below is a tiny germ produced in the course of that brewing. The formulations here mainly come from the opportunity to exchange views with UNIC, and those exchanges also led to her distancing herself from me. Of course, all contextual information has been cut away; in any case,…

“United in Hatred Against the Enemy” and “Hating Evil as Though It Were an Enemy”: I Can’t Do That.

Friends who have long followed Suixuan will probably already have noticed that Unic, who used to be a regular here and once declared how much she agreed with my views and how much she supported my blog, suddenly became so agitated after I came back from my period of seclusion that she eventually left Suixuan. Some people may wonder: what on earth happened? In fact I was quite astonished myself; I really had underestimated a girl’s emotional reactions. But there was nothing to be done about it. Gentleness and deference may put others at ease, but they cannot help them reach a decision. And since she was facing the college…
