The first organizing meeting had already been held at the very end of June, but we never put out any promotional material, because we ran into a bit of trouble with the website construction. We have now decided to first set up a BBS platform using my own personal space, and then, once it matures later on, we can always migrate it somewhere else. The theme song of *Civilization IV*—of course, I had already posted it long ago—but since this piece has just won a Grammy Award (Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals), it’s worth posting again~ Besides appearing with the release of *Civilization IV*, it seems to have been issued later as the first track on the crossover album Calling All Dawns, which also won this year’s Grammy for Best Classical Crossover Album. “Science What Is” is a general elective offered this semester; you can find the course description on the Keke forum. In brief, this course is jointly chaired by Rao Yi from the School of Life Sciences and Teacher Wu, with a dozen eminent professors from various disciplines invited to give lectures, and then several teaching assistants organizing discussion sections. The lecture lineup for this course is formidable. Old notes: At about 12:30 a.m. on July 26, a mudflow disaster occurred at the construction site of a hydropower station on the Migu River in Migu Village, Pula Di Township, Gongshan County, killing 11 people. The Ministry of Water Resources of China then issued a special emergency notice, requiring that safety measures for flood season be effectively strengthened at all water conservancy and hydropower projects under construction. On August 18, a mudflow suddenly struck Pula Township, Gongshan County, Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, and the village was suspected to have suffered a catastrophe of total destruction. SB will be opening, and of course that’s not bad. I’ve always been in favor of this sort of large-scale celebratory event—in my view, throwing money at song, dance, and fireworks is better than throwing money at the Three Gorges Dam. And yet I can’t help it, I can’t help but vent a little. This opening ceremony is fine in every other respect, but the appearance of these two orphans really set me off.
