The New Island Salon Will Experimentally Restart on August 29 Still atthe Suzhouqiao subway station entrance, at the Zhongguancun branch of New Island Coffee, at the easternmost window seat in the non-smoking area. I’ll still go in the morning, though I may not get there exactly at 9, and in the evening I’ll probably leave around nine or ten. As for the time and place next semester, those may still be adjusted; we’ll talk about it then. I will still be hanging around Xin Dao on the Saturdays of next week and the week after that, though I may go back to Shanghai on the 18th and the 25th. And I should be back in August. I have no particular plans for the summer vacation salons; basically I’ll just be studying on my own or surfing the internet. With finals approaching, maybe this was a dying flash of the setting sun? This issue of New Island saw an astonishing number of people showing up, especially those rare and hard-to-see exotic beasts, including four old-timers I had summoned, as well as Senior Brother Botian, who parachuted in on his own! I once said, “Violent revolution is unreasonable”—because “violence” is always non-rational, and revolution is always illegal. Yet this gives rise to a still more severe problem: if violence may be lawful, then how is the rationality of law possible? At today’s teaching discussion meeting, the matter of last year’s student salon came up by chance. It was held three times and then no more. As for why it was stopped, ZW seemed to have said something about the reasons; I wasn’t paying close attention. But after I got back, I kept thinking about it, and I always felt it was a pity that the student salon had been discontinued.
