I will still be hanging around Xin Dao on the Saturdays of next week and the week after that, though I may go back to Shanghai on the 18th and the 25th. And I should be back in August. I have no particular plans for the summer vacation salons; basically I’ll just be studying on my own or surfing the internet. This issue of New Island saw an astonishing number of people showing up, especially those rare and hard-to-see exotic beasts, including four old-timers I had summoned, as well as Senior Brother Botian, who parachuted in on his own! I once said, “Violent revolution is unreasonable”—because “violence” is always non-rational, and revolution is always illegal. Yet this gives rise to a still more severe problem: if violence may be lawful, then how is the rationality of law possible? We know that laws are made by the government (whether that so-called government represents God, the emperor, or all citizens), and the implementation of law often has to appeal to violence. At today’s teaching discussion meeting, the matter of last year’s student salon came up by chance. It was held three times and then no more. As for why it was stopped, ZW seemed to have said something about the reasons; I wasn’t paying close attention.
