    Keep a Proper Mindset!

Thanks to Chong-ge for the criticism. First of all, there is indeed a problem with my writing style. If all my articles were posted on some philosophy forum, then I would not really be all that different from the “folk philosophers,” and so now it really is necessary to give serious attention to the problem of style. In the final analysis, the problem of style is still a problem of attitude. I do indeed need to seriously reflect on whether I have truly put “humility” into practice rather than leaving it at the level of words. I believe that my experience under the stars arises from the heart, and therefore…

    Caution in Speech and Writing

I have always placed great emphasis on “慎言” — caution in speech. You can tell from my article “I Despise Plagiarism in Papers” that I attach great importance to being responsible for one’s own words. I believe that every extra piece of writing left in the world is an extra responsibility taken on; things in black and white cannot be denied simply because one wants to deny them. I will have to be responsible for everything I have ever written for my whole life. If one day I discover that something I wrote before is problematic, I cannot just toss off a line like, “That was what I wrote back…

Kant and Husserl—Scattered Affinities from Reading the History of Philosophy

The other day, in passing, I mentioned that I felt Kant was more worthy of looking up to than Nietzsche, and that Husserl seemed deeper than Heidegger. — This is a rough impression I have recently formed from reading the history of Western philosophy; I have not read much in the way of further specialized studies or original texts, and what I am talking about is only my first impression. Even with only a few superficial introductions, one can still gain at least a basic understanding of those philosophers’ thought. For example, even before I had read the Analects or the Mencius, I already had a strong liking for Confucius…

    Arrogant Humility?

My philosophy is called starry-sky philosophy; some people say it is a philosophy of the starry sky and rainwater. In fact, the meaning of rainwater is already included in the starry sky. The starry sky contains three layers of meaning: first, it means what I said in my “about me” note, namely gratitude and tolerance; second, it stands for praise and yearning for the infinitely profound cosmos; third, it stands for reverence and humility before the majesty and mystery of nature. The latter two are basically also what Kant meant. On all kinds of occasions, I am always fond of emphasizing the importance of humility. Whether facing nature, facing the…

“I Can Do It” and True Courage

There are many successful people who, when they give impassioned speeches or write self-help books, lavish praise on the “I can do it” mindset. But in fact this attitude is not suitable for promotion, because in modern society, so-called successful people are very, very few. Their success certainly has something to do with their good mindset, but more importantly one cannot ignore the factors of opportunity and luck. It is impossible for everyone to be that accomplished in life. If everyone insists on the “I can do it” mindset, yet cannot have a healthy estimate of their own potential, then the result for more people will be disappointment. This is…

I’ve kind of regained the feeling of writing essays in high school~

Recently I’ve managed to churn out so many essays in one go, all of them scribbled casually on paper during self-study and then typed up directly when I got back. It reminded me of high school, when every week I had to write an essay for my Chinese teacher; in fact, these recent pieces have hardly improved on what I wrote back then. At the time, the weekly essay was usually just a little over a thousand characters, and I would generally riff on assorted issues from heaven and earth, antiquity and the present, the universe and human life. It was probably not much different in style from what I’ve…

Heh-heh, an essay from middle school days…

There are two origins for this piece. One is that a couple of days ago, on the Philosophy board of a BBS, I saw someone post Marx’s essay written when he was seventeen and graduating from high school, “The Consideration of a Young Person in Choosing a Profession,” and I was suddenly moved by a flood of emotion… The other is that just now Chongge recommended me an article; I haven’t read it closely yet, but merely seeing the phrase “the germination of capitalism” in it set off some associations… In fact, I had only suddenly recalled some of my own ideas from middle school—that is, by the time I…

I despise plagiarism in academic papers!

There are two reasons for writing this blog post. First, someone said that I had put some papers and such on my blog, which was not very good; second, someone suggested borrowing a paper from me to read, in order to help his classmate write a paper. I’m not afraid of plagiarism for the papers I post on my blog—if you want to plagiarize, then go ahead. If this paper is not very well written, then—obviously, my writing level a couple of years from now should still improve, and the paper you plagiarize can only ever reach my past level; if this paper is written extremely well, then I’m even…

The Twin Dragons of the Great Tang

It’s been a long time since I last wrote a reading note…… At the Di Tan book market, I bought a complete set of *The Legend of the Twin Dragons of Great Tang*, a wuxia saga running to several million characters. Back when Huang Yi’s serialization was nearing its end, I read it once online; later I bought a pirated copy and read it again. This time, though still pirated, the quality is much better than the one I bought before: there are no missing sections, and it reads much more smoothly. And yet my reading speed for this book has gotten slower each time; in fact, I now read…
