阅读全文The title is certainly not inverted. Those familiar with my consistent position, or those who have heard Yangzi’s history of Chinese philosophy, will not find this surprising. The phrase “Rather be a true villain than a hypocritical gentleman” is quite fashionable now; many people even quote it with the formulas “as the saying goes” and “there is a common saying.” What does it mean? The fact that this phrase has been enshrined as “common sense” reveals certain features of current fashion. “Hypocritical gentleman” is of course a pejorative term. If by hypocritical gentleman one means someone whose lips are honeyed but whose heart is a dagger, who acts one way…

My father only told me about it yesterday and asked me to go, which was only natural; my mother, worried it would affect my studies, had not wanted to let me come back, but that was clearly unreasonable. Though I was not especially close to my grandfather, how many grandfathers can I have? My mother and her sisters were not especially unable to accept his passing, because my grandfather had had uremia for eight years, and for more than the past half year his condition had been extremely dangerous; everyone had long since…
阅读全文When I mentioned to ZW that I could take ready-made articles from my blog and put them in Qinggongyuan, ZW said, “Spare us~” Sigh, sigh… are my articles really so unbearable to everyone? I’m rather hurt here~~~ Most of the complete articles on my blog are just casual reflections anyway; to say that these few articles of mine are “too academic” is simply absurd. They’re all written very casually, and they’re still far from any “academic” level. Of course, whether the quality of the articles is too poor to make it into Qinggongyuan I’m not quite sure; it’s very hard to judge one’s own writing objectively. As editor-in-chief, I originally…
阅读全文Nihilism, especially moral nihilism, is a conspicuous predicament of the present age. But what is the source of nihilism? In China, we say that from the May Fourth era to the Cultural Revolution, traditional values were comprehensively overthrown; in the West, we say that science shattered the authority of Christianity and plunged us into the predicament of God is dead. Yet these are only concrete manifestations of the problem; they do not strike at its root. Why are we unable to persuade nihilists? In fact, once the original authoritative value system has been toppled, we might be able to build a society of value pluralism, where different people can believe…
阅读全文Today I picked up a strange book at the Inward Bookstore and ended up reading it until I was almost out of breath…… Peking University Department of Philosophy Class of 1970 worker-peasant-soldier students: Annotations to The Analects, Zhonghua Book Company, 1974 Below I randomly excerpt two relatively short “criticisms”: 10·22 A friend dies, with nowhere to turn, and he says: “It is for me to bury him” [Notes] 1 Friend — refers to someone who shared Confucius’s aspirations and path; this person died and nobody took care of him, clearly a decadent aristocrat. [Translation] (Confucius’s) friend died, and no one took responsibility for him; (Confucius) said: “Let me take charge…
