    Keep a Proper Mindset!

Thanks to Chong-ge for the criticism. First of all, there is indeed a problem with my writing style. If all my articles were posted on some philosophy forum, then I would not really be all that different from the “folk philosophers,” and so now it really is necessary to give serious attention to the problem of style. In the final analysis, the problem of style is still a problem of attitude. I do indeed need to seriously reflect on whether I have truly put “humility” into practice rather than leaving it at the level of words. I believe that my experience under the stars arises from the heart, and therefore…

    Caution in Speech and Writing

I have always placed great emphasis on “慎言” — caution in speech. You can tell from my article “I Despise Plagiarism in Papers” that I attach great importance to being responsible for one’s own words. I believe that every extra piece of writing left in the world is an extra responsibility taken on; things in black and white cannot be denied simply because one wants to deny them. I will have to be responsible for everything I have ever written for my whole life. If one day I discover that something I wrote before is problematic, I cannot just toss off a line like, “That was what I wrote back…

My View of Life (and Supplement)

“Life is to be lived through clearly, not thought through clearly!” — I forget whom I heard this from, but it feels immensely true. Questions such as the meaning of life and the purpose of life: when our lives reach their end, life itself will give us the answers. To puzzle over them while still young only brings suffering upon ourselves, and yields no answer worth the name. Even if we do arrive at some answer, that answer often dissolves with the passage of time; when we look back in old age, it may no longer be quite the same thing at all. But the question of life’s meaning is…

Why I Chose Philosophy of Science

This was also a topic discussed with ZW last night.  Q: Why is philosophy of science, unlike philosophy of history, political philosophy, and so on, able to become an independent second-level discipline? A: The philosophy of science became an independent second-level discipline for both historical and contemporary reasons. The historical reason is that philosophy of science was originally what was called “dialectics of nature”; in that era, it was an attempt to provide methodological “guidance” for science, and this is an institutional arrangement left over from history. The contemporary reason is this: ours is precisely the age of so-called “science and technology”; almost all the problems this age faces—questions of…

Kant and Husserl—Scattered Affinities from Reading the History of Philosophy

The other day, in passing, I mentioned that I felt Kant was more worthy of looking up to than Nietzsche, and that Husserl seemed deeper than Heidegger. — This is a rough impression I have recently formed from reading the history of Western philosophy; I have not read much in the way of further specialized studies or original texts, and what I am talking about is only my first impression. Even with only a few superficial introductions, one can still gain at least a basic understanding of those philosophers’ thought. For example, even before I had read the Analects or the Mencius, I already had a strong liking for Confucius…

The Difference Between Me and Dogmatism or Relativism—Please Pay Attention to the Basis of All My Arguments

Just by reading those essays I’ve posted on my blog, one might feel that I have a tendency toward dogmatism. I admit that my writing is indeed apt to give rise to the misunderstanding that I am dogmatic and overestimate my own abilities; in fact, I myself became aware of this feeling, and that is what gave rise to the lament in the previous post about arrogance and humility. But I am fundamentally different from dogmatists, especially those so-called “folk philosophers”! To understand this, first do not forget the basis on which I proceed in any discussion—I never hope to persuade others; while firmly believing in my own views, I…

    Arrogant Humility?

My philosophy is called starry-sky philosophy; some people say it is a philosophy of the starry sky and rainwater. In fact, the meaning of rainwater is already included in the starry sky. The starry sky contains three layers of meaning: first, it means what I said in my “about me” note, namely gratitude and tolerance; second, it stands for praise and yearning for the infinitely profound cosmos; third, it stands for reverence and humility before the majesty and mystery of nature. The latter two are basically also what Kant meant. On all kinds of occasions, I am always fond of emphasizing the importance of humility. Whether facing nature, facing the…

“I Can Do It” and True Courage

There are many successful people who, when they give impassioned speeches or write self-help books, lavish praise on the “I can do it” mindset. But in fact this attitude is not suitable for promotion, because in modern society, so-called successful people are very, very few. Their success certainly has something to do with their good mindset, but more importantly one cannot ignore the factors of opportunity and luck. It is impossible for everyone to be that accomplished in life. If everyone insists on the “I can do it” mindset, yet cannot have a healthy estimate of their own potential, then the result for more people will be disappointment. This is…

    Annotations on the Analects…………

Today I picked up a strange book at the Inward Bookstore and ended up reading it until I was almost out of breath…… Peking University Department of Philosophy Class of 1970 worker-peasant-soldier students: Annotations to The Analects, Zhonghua Book Company, 1974 Below I randomly excerpt two relatively short “criticisms”: 10·22 A friend dies, with nowhere to turn, and he says: “It is for me to bury him” [Notes] 1 Friend — refers to someone who shared Confucius’s aspirations and path; this person died and nobody took care of him, clearly a decadent aristocrat. [Translation] (Confucius’s) friend died, and no one took responsibility for him; (Confucius) said: “Let me take charge…
