Preface to the Fortieth Issue of “Gongqingyuan”

Preface After nearly a year of preparation, this issue of Gongqingyuan has finally arrived on schedule! …Though I very much want to say that, the fact is that the publication of this issue of Gongqingyuan was delayed by several months beyond the original plan! As editor-in-chief, I am deeply ashamed. I won’t go into the reasons at length; the main problem was that the layout work had been put off for far too long! By the way, the layout editor for this issue is also me… Let us hope this belated collection will not disappoint everyone too much. I also hope that everyone will, as always, continue to support Gongqingyuan…

    Ode to Wind and Sand

Recently Beijing has been howling with wind, with yellow sand filling the sky; it really is not good weather. When I was little, I liked rainy days and sunny days, and did not like wind. I always felt that fierce winds made people irritable, while a light breeze made them feel airy and insubstantial. Wind seemed to be associated either with violence or with frivolity. But that is just like not liking to eat green vegetables and fish when one is a child: it is merely a matter of childhood. That day, when I got up early and saw dust and sand all over the ground, the words that surged…

    Plato’s Café

Lately I’ve been haunting Plato Cafe quite often.   It’s a newly opened cafe, next to Wan Sheng Bookstore, on the same floor as Bifengtang.   This is a rather unusual coffee shop. To be honest, I’m really worried it won’t be able to stay open. I come here often precisely because of how empty it is—such a sharp contrast to the Bifengtang next door!   What does it feel like to walk into Plato Cafe? Hmm… strange… really… it’s almost like a study room in a library! Besides the arrangement of the tables and chairs and the bright lighting, there’s even a whole wall of books here! There’s also…

In Memory of My Maternal Grandfather

My maternal grandfather passed away on the evening of the Qingming Festival. Today is his funeral service. My father only told me about it yesterday and asked me to go, which was only natural; my mother, worried it would affect my studies, had not wanted to let me come back, but that was clearly unreasonable. Though I was not especially close to my grandfather, how many grandfathers can I have? My mother and her sisters were not especially unable to accept his passing, because my grandfather had had uremia for eight years, and for more than the past half year his condition had been extremely dangerous; everyone had long since…

    A Disappointing Marxist Philosophy Forum

Today I attended the philosophy-forum event. I was deeply disappointed. The topic was “Transcending and Reflecting on ‘Modernity,’” with Nie Jinfang, Zhang Libo, Yang Xuegong, and Yang Haifeng. Originally they had said Feng Zhiyi would chair it, but Teacher Feng didn’t come. Teacher Nie seemed to say that his absence would not have much effect on the level of the forum, but I think the level was truly terrible. I do not doubt the academic standing of the teachers involved, but as a forum open to all teachers and students across the university, this event was a failure—one might even say a shameful forum! At the very least, the image…

    Xu Jinhua’s Lecture

Pretty interesting. Mr. Xu was very witty. But he does indeed seem to have a bit of a folk-science air about him. His “integrated waterway” sounds far too mystical; to fantasize about solving “all environmental problems” through such a technology, even if Mr. Xu insists that this is not technology but science, is still a bit too naive. As for the “fundamental error of Einstein,” that was the weak point of Mr. Xu’s lecture this time. Of course, science must oppose blind faith in authority, but scientific masters are after all masters—how could they be so easily refuted? Wave-particle duality is after all persuasive; not to mention photons and light…

    Colors of the Wind

Disney animated film 《Pocahontas》 theme song “Colors of the Wind,” a song of awe before nature~               Colors of the Wind You think I'm an ignorant savage and you've been so many places.                I guess it must be so but still I cannot see.  If the savage one is me, how can there be so much that you don't know, you don't know, you don't know.  You think you own whatever land you land on.  The earth is just a dead thing you can claim.  But I know every rock and tree and creature.  Has a life…

    On Zhang Weiying and Reform

Mingzi asked me to comment on this article http://blog.sina.com.cn/u/4836a351010002id#comment. Seeing the two keywords “Zhang Weiying” + “reform” really stirred up a lot of long-buried feelings. An excerpt from the comment follows: I don’t want to say very much, because ever since I first set foot at Peking University, the first Peking University professor I looked down on was Zhang Weiying. Under this intensely special emotional state, I can’t guarantee that my judgment is calm. Peking University is not trash, but even in the best place there will be trash, and Zhang Weiying is trash. I don’t understand economics very well. I “came to know” Zhang Weiying when, in my senior…

    “A Pitch-Black Void”

“Pitch-black!”  It is said that when I first said this sentence, it gave my mother quite a shock, and at the same time filled her with joy.  I can’t remember anything about the situation at the time… hmm, it was probably when I was three years old.  It must have been when my mother was carrying me down the stairs, with no lights on and everything very dark, and for some reason I suddenly blurted out that line. When I said it, my mother thought: Good heavens, this kid can hardly even talk yet, and he already knows how to use idioms! Hmm, he’s got a future; I must…

Could It Be That My Article “Gongqingyuan” Cannot Be Used?

When I mentioned to ZW that I could take ready-made articles from my blog and put them in Qinggongyuan, ZW said, “Spare us~” Sigh, sigh… are my articles really so unbearable to everyone? I’m rather hurt here~~~ Most of the complete articles on my blog are just casual reflections anyway; to say that these few articles of mine are “too academic” is simply absurd. They’re all written very casually, and they’re still far from any “academic” level. Of course, whether the quality of the articles is too poor to make it into Qinggongyuan I’m not quite sure; it’s very hard to judge one’s own writing objectively. As editor-in-chief, I originally…
