    Ideal

It seems that the aftereffect of that erguotou was quite something; I no longer know what I’m talking about. This sort of inexplicable writing was originally meant for Yilin Xiaozhu, but after thinking it over and over, I figured I’d better not make myself split into multiple personalities again—what’s wrong with putting it here? I’ve always said I’m an ideal realist, or a realist idealist; in any case, I look for ideals in reality. Ideals detached from reality are empty, or at most can only make you more dissatisfied with reality. They aren’t worth your yearning or infatuation, and as you grow up, these so-called yearnings will leave you. For…

This Episode’s Music: Bach’s Cello Suite No. 3, BWV 1009, 6. Gigue (Jig)

Original: http://bbs.llldns.com/music/nipper/classics/001/001.mp3 Lately I’ve been listening to Bach’s various violins and cellos, especially including the legendary six Unaccompanied Cello Suites, and they really are excellent. Some pieces don’t especially strike me when I listen to a single movement on its own, but after listening to unaccompanied cello for a while in succession, I get a kind of marvelous feeling, as if I’ve been hurled into another world…… Unfortunately, the CD I bought actually has a bad sector, and just by chance the last two pieces won’t play, which is pretty depressing…… I searched online for quite a while, but couldn’t find what I was looking for. It seems that Baidu…

    Friend

What kind of person is your friend? Not someone for whom you can die; that is your “idol.” Nor someone for whom you live; that is only your beloved. Nor necessarily someone you spend every day with, inseparable; that may just be playmates. Nor necessarily someone who shares your ideals and understands you; that may be comrades or bosom friends. Simply put, a friend is someone with whom you can share joy and shoulder sorrow. You are sad because your friend is sad, and joyful because your friend is joyful. Sorry, I said that wrong. Such a person is your family. Well, anyway, friends and family are more or less…

[U.S.] Robert Fogelin: “Walking on the Tightrope of Reason”

[U.S.]Robert Fogelin: *Walking on the Tightrope of Reason—The Uncertain Life of Rational Animals*, translated by Chen Rongxia, New Star Press, first edition, January 2007, 27.00 yuan Pages1~2 As rational animals, we live in a world full of hidden perils. The universe in which we live is extraordinarily, almost unimaginably, complex. On this point, Einstein once commented: “God is subtle, but he is not intentionally so.” Yet if we consider the strangeness embodied in reports from the frontiers of science, the universe seems increasingly marvelous. However, this complexity and strangeness do not necessarily make the lives of us rational animals full of uncertainty; they merely make life arduous.A more urgent question…

    On the Peng Yu Case

About the Peng Yu case has recently become quite popular online; you can find it anywhere if you search casually, so I won’t quote much here: “On September 5, the Gulou District Court in Nanjing delivered its ruling in the Peng Yu case, deciding that Peng Yu should compensate the plaintiff for 40% of her losses, amounting to 45,876 yuan. The judgment said, ‘From common sense, it is more likely that Peng Yu collided with the old woman. If Peng Yu had not knocked down the old woman, he would have had no need at all to send her to the hospital.’ Once the verdict was announced, public opinion across…

Doing Philosophy Is Like Building a House

Different philosophers build different kinds of architecture—some are magnificent and luxurious, some solemn and quiet, some plain and simple; some can provide people with a place to settle down, while others are made for revelry; some are towering spires for people to gaze up at, some are labyrinths buried deep underground waiting to be explored, and some are merely foundations laid in the hope that later generations will carry the project forward,…… The architects of those new buildings, each with a style all its own, are the philosophers. But they either build upon the foundations laid by their predecessors, or else innovate by imitating and blending earlier thinkers; if one…

    The stock market involves risks…

A few days ago, just because I made a slip in trading, I cut my profits from more than 4,000 at the peak down to 2,500. Today at noon I was forced to go to school for a meeting. After the meeting, I went by Carrefour and a few other places to wander around for a bit, and only came back around 3 o’clock, just before the close. All I saw was the market plunging; Zhongguancun hit limit down, and the other two stocks I held also tumbled badly. In the blink of an eye, almost all my profits were wiped out again (only 500 left)…… Sigh, comrades with heart…

This Issue’s Music: The Season of Love – from The Time Traveler Who Left My Heart in the Aegean Sea

Season of Love – excerpted from "Time Traveler: My Heart Remains in the Aegean Sea" Marching Season From "Aphrodite Greece" (or still from "Heat Is On") Latest Comments   Gucha 2007-09-20 22:59:16 [Reply] I thought I should mention this: I heard that this piece comes from the new-age electronic music master Yanni, and that the original version should be "Large-Scale Modern Electronic Instrument Concert." So I later went and bought two of Yanni’s CDs (http://www.amazon.cn/detail/product.asp?prodid=bkmu601517). Sure enough, all the pieces were large-scale electronic music, with this one alone still being a piano solo. It has now been found that this piece is taken from 1987’s Private Collection: Piano Solo 2,…
