    Philosophy and Poetry

I had long wanted to write an article about poetry, but I kept putting pen to paper, and the folder I had created called “Music—Poetry” had never lived up to its name. One reason I kept not writing was that I felt I was, after all, a complete illiterate, utterly ignorant; how could I presume to talk about poetry? Apart from the Tang poems I learned in class as a child, and the poetry collections by Bei Dao, Hai Zi, and the like that I now very occasionally flip through at random, I have virtually no firsthand experience of reading poetry at all. At the same time, as for criticism…

  • On the Original Content of My Philosophy

On the Original Content of My Philosophy

First of all, I myself have never cared about what so-called original content my philosophy may have. What matters is that my philosophy belongs to me; even to say that my philosophy is myself is enough. What I pursue is self-knowledge and self-improvement, and all the works that take textual form and flow outward are merely “traces” of that pursuit, not the pursuit itself. No matter how important those things may be to me, whether treated with indifference like excrement or treasured and worn like a diamond ring, they are not in themselves all that important. It is like pursuing a love affair: in the process, there will be memories,…

  • Relationism and the Philosophy of Communication

Relationism and the Philosophy of Communication

Thinking of the “banner” of the latest version of old-school philosophy. It could be called “relationalism” or “communication philosophy.” Earlier, I preferred “pluralism” and “perspectivism,” and felt that “relativism” was too extreme or too forceful. But now it suddenly strikes me: why not translate “relativism” as “relationalism”? That better matches the original meaning of “relate,” and it can also express a line of thought that suits my taste more. When people hear “relativism,” they’re likely to shout: “Huh? Everything is relative?” But if I say “everything is related,” doesn’t that feel rather different? If “absolutism” pursues the “absolute,” then what does “relativism” pursue? What does it mean to “pursue the…

On Women Philosophers and the Top-Bottom Dichotomy

Here are some of the things I was forced to say in my comments after “I Won’t Date in a Café”; since I’ve written them down, they’re now black on white, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Given that this is no small topic, I’m setting aside a new post here for the archive. Later, my classmate Chern, who is even more evil than I am, said that mine was a “female philosopher cultivation plan.” That’s an interesting title, but it’s too liable to cause misunderstanding. My conspiracy is extremely complex: it is neither to seduce mm, nor to cultivate female philosophers, nor even to find an mm…

  • On “吐嘈”

    On “吐嘈”

Recently I’ve had a way of putting it that philosophy is a kind of act of “tucao.” I’m going to boldly adopt this “term” in my own philosophy; it really is strikingly apt. Anyone who often watches Japanese anime will know the word “tucao,” but “outsiders” and beginners probably won’t quite understand what it actually means, so let me explain it roughly. The explanations circulating online seem all to be copied and pasted from a passage by the POPGO subtitle group. That’s really quite lazy. You can look it up on Baidu Baike or the like. I’ll combine some easily found online materials and briefly restate it in my own…

  • What Is Questioning? — On the Search for Possibility, Again

What Is Questioning? — On the Search for Possibility, Again

We often say that the core of philosophy is “questions,” and that philosophy’s mission is “to ask,” and so on, but what sort of activity is philosophical questioning, exactly? A question like “What’s for dinner tonight?” does not seem to be philosophy’s concern, so what, precisely, is philosophical questioning? I have touched on related topics in earlier essays. This article may not offer much that is new; perhaps it is just a review or a summary. First, people often talk about so-called “problem consciousness.” This term is used far too loosely, but what does it actually mean? In some places it is simply used as if it were identical with…

  • Philosophy and Nudity

    Philosophy and Nudity

Heaven knows why, amid the pressure of several entirely muddled papers, I still have the mind to write so many essays. But there’s nothing to be done: when you need to let it out, holding it in is miserable. Once I finish this one, this round of catharsis can come to an end. That is to say, from “From Fisherman to Pirate” on to this piece, one could say that a series has taken shape, and that it can be understood as the final complaints before setting sail. From here on out…… whew—anyway, I’m no longer sitting and waiting in the palace. This piece has been given a rather eye-catching…

  • There Are No Experts in Philosophy

There Are No Experts in Philosophy

I said very early on—sophomore year, maybe freshman year?—something like, “I don’t want to be an expert; I want only to be a master.” At first it was just something said privately among friends, but then it spread, and so I could only regard it as public speech. Of course I have always been able to stand behind that sentence. It is based on how I situated myself and on my understanding of philosophy. Over these years I have, I think, come to understand philosophy more deeply, and so now I can offer some more penetrating interpretation of what I said back then. First, we need to ask: what exactly…

    “The Philosophy of Online Games”

    “The Philosophy of Online Games”

For a philosophy to spread widely and be remembered by later generations, a distinctive and resounding name may well be of some help. What could my philosophy be called by others? Terms like critical philosophy, philosophy of technology, philosophy of history, and pluralism have already been overused; things like philosophy of the stars and philosophy of media also seem insufficiently precise. Suddenly it occurs to me that perhaps it could be called “network game philosophy.” The two words “network” and “game” can indicate the distinctive features and central concerns of my philosophy. Under this heading, almost all the questions of traditional philosophy—ontology, epistemology, axiology, and so on—can be developed. Moreover,…

  • The Labyrinth of Concepts

    The Labyrinth of Concepts

Concepts are like a labyrinth, language like a dense forest, and one can get so deeply lost in them as to be unable to extricate oneself. Zen says: the sea of suffering is boundless, but turn back and there is the shore; lay down attachment, and at once you can transcend. This may well be true. But why do I still remain stubbornly deluded? Because the labyrinth is a game. When you are playing a labyrinth game, isn’t your goal to get out of the labyrinth? Then you can obviously get out at any time—just lift yourself to a higher dimension and step outside. Why must you so obediently struggle…
