This book mainly starts from religion, rather than, like Brooke’s *Science and Religion*, placing more emphasis on the history of science. Lately I’ve been reading some very thick books that are impossible to finish in a single day, so I’m just reading these little books on the side to make up the numbers; I won’t write many notes. Barrow’s range is quite broad; the subjects covered in this book include astronomy, geography, mathematics, physics, history, culture, religion, language, fine arts, music, and so on, so it is hard to give a concise overview. A couple of random remarks, by the way: this “Postmodern Confrontation Series” is, in terms of content, all quite good, but… alas, such a thin little book, with only 70,000 characters, already takes 5.375 sheets, and still costs 12.8 yuan! Just as a lightning strike is an extremely accidental event, hard to predict and grasp, people can nonetheless figure out what conditions make lightning more likely to occur.
